2 Ways to Use Se-REM

Method 1 — Daydreaming (Eyes Closed)

Using earbuds or earphones, sit in a safe and quiet place for 60 minutes of having a Daydream. Eyes closed, sitting in a chair. Be open to whatever emotions come up. This will dissolve your traumatic emotions.

Focus on the visual images associated with your hurt and trauma. The first time a person uses Se-REM, their response will partly depend on how defended they are from experiencing their own strong emotions. Some may be on guard the first time through. But, once they are assured that the content is all positive, they may do it again and benefit fully. Many people use Avoidance as their primary coping mechanism. That is healthy in childhood, but not as an adult. There are some people whose whole system is so oriented to avoidance they will go to sleep. It is helpful to know why this is happening so you can push yourself to stay awake and allow whatever feelings to come up and be expressed.

If you find yourself with an excessive amount of emotion, you can use Se-REM in the alternate way until you are ready to do more emotional work.

Method 2 — For Obsessive Thinking (Eyes Open)

With eyes open — Walk with Se-REM using earbuds for 40–60 minutes. Ignore the guided imagery in the program. Think obsessively about the trauma or hurtful or anxious elements. The Bi-lateral music will help your brain process the trauma on a deeper level, allowing you to end the obsessive thinking.

To Other Therapists

I have used this therapy session with thousands of clients and have had miraculous results. It has helped clients who previously would have had little chance of change or reducing their pain or their problem behavior. Se-REM promotes change so effectively it has helped individuals and even marital couples make changes that at other times would have been impossible. You can use Se-REM in your office, or have clients do it at home and then process their experience with you in their next session. Please consider using it for your own clients and you may find that change becomes more possible.

Welcome to Se-REM

Se-REM is the most powerful and effective self-help aid that has ever been developed. It allows you to direct your own personal therapy and recovery from any trauma and stress. You only need to daydream while your brain is stimulated into an REM state. It is during REM (rapid eye movement state of sleep) that your brain is at its full potential to process and resolve all the negative emotions that can stay lodged in your brain for years after any trauma. These emotions are lodged in a portion of the brain called the amygdala and will often stay there even after treatment with traditional therapies.

You can take charge of your own therapy. Decide ahead of using Se-REM, which traumas in your life you are prepared to visualize. By day dreaming and to some extent reliving the event while you are totally relaxed, your brain concludes it is not necessary to hold onto the fear, or terror or sadness or anger because the event is in the past and it no longer needs to be relevant in your day to day life. If reliving or daydreaming about the whole event provokes more emotion than you want, you can turn off the music and return to do more therapy later.

Se-REM Can Resolve These Problems

Below are some of the traumas that can be resolved or improved through using Se-REM:

Military PTSD, Childhood Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Violent trauma, Loss or Grief, Anxiety Attacks, Phobias, Spousal infidelity, Anger or Rage, Nightmares, Couple's conflicts, Obsessive thinking, Medical trauma, Car or Airplane trauma, and Insomnia.

Se-REM Is Not Effective For

This self help program is years in development. It has been tested on clients with every type of stress and trauma. Some clients will use it once and feel so resolved that they do not need to use it again. Others have used it multiple times each week to not only resolve events in their past but to control the stress in their current lives.

Se-REM combines elements of 6 therapies that make them all more effective together. It begins with a relaxation exercise (for some it will be self-hypnotic). It uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which creates a REM (rapid eye movement) brain state. Child within therapy asks the listener to be an Adult to comfort and love the child within. Music therapy adds to the relaxation and Awe Therapy (connecting profoundly with Nature). Se-REM concludes with Mindfulness, being in the moment, positive affirmation, self esteem building, and Motivation. It inspires you to be the best person you can be.

Mission Statement

Se-REM devotes itself to lessening the impact of Trauma in the world. It strives to provide the most effective self help trauma treatment at as close to free as possible. Se-REM is dedicated to increased compassion and empathy and improved mental health.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Se-REM?

It is a self-help audio program, available to you in 4 ways: a download from this website, a hard copy CD, a Flash drive, or a preloaded MP3 player. Any of the last 3 will be mailed to you at our expense.

2. What is REM?

Rapid Eye Movement is a Dream stage of Sleep.

3. How does Se-REM create a REM state in the brain?

It uses classical music and guided imagery recorded on different audio channels so the sound alternates back and forth from ear to ear.

4. Can I listen to it on my stereo?

It will play on a stereo but it will have little to no benefit. It must be listened to with earphones or earbuds to create a REM brain state.

5. Do I direct my brain to have images or just sit back and watch what happens?

You can do both. Se-REM allows you to explore what is in your brain.

6. Why did I just think of all positive things while doing Se-REM?

The most common coping mechanism in children is Avoidance. If this is still a major way you deal with hurt, it will be necessary for you to direct your brain to have these images. Se-REM will only help you if you revisit the hurtful experiences.

7. What do I do with the fear and dread I have about going back to my traumatic experience?

Se-REM begins with a relaxation exercise that is mildly hypnotic. You will be very relaxed. Even though you may feel strong emotion revisiting the trauma, you will also know you are completely safe.

8. Why do I go right to sleep when I use Se-REM?

If your coping mechanism is Avoidance, going to sleep is a way to not face the hurt. Try doing Se-REM when you are not tired.

9. I am afraid of revisiting my past trauma. Is there a chance that this will overwhelm me?

Some people feel immediate relief after one session. Others will need several sessions. When you do Se-REM the first night your brain will likely continue to do therapeutic work during REM dreaming. Most people wake up feeling better than they have in a long time. While people experience strong emotion, no one has been overwhelmed.

10. Is there a limit on how often I can do Se-REM?

No. It can be done every day or once a week. It is completely up to you. Some people can only do 15 minutes at a time, of dealing with their hurt. Others have done the program twice in a row.

11. I did Se-REM 3 times and the first 2 were very emotional with a huge release, but the 3rd time this didn't happen. Why?

You were successful in processing and dissolving the traumatic emotion in your brain. The 3rd time you went looking for it and it was gone.

12. I don't have visual images or pictures connected to my trauma, just obsessive thoughts that I can't stop thinking about. Can Se-REM help me stop this?

Yes. There are 2 ways to use Se-REM. The first way is sitting and daydreaming. This is for trauma that has a visual component. When your trauma is largely cognitive, such as spousal infidelity, use Se-REM the 2nd way. Skip tracks 1 & 2 (the directions for use and the relaxation exercise), and go straight to music. Go for a walk and do your obsessive thinking while your brain is being stimulated and your obsessive thoughts will be much reduced. When your brain is stimulated the processing happens on a deeper level and the brain accomplishes what it is trying to do.

13. What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapy developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987. It is at the heart of Se-REM. Both rely on Bi-lateral Stimulation to help the brain make changes.

14. How does Se-REM work?

It is only when the brain is in an REM state that the whole brain is in communication with all of its parts. When the whole brain is working, it is much more effective at dissolving traumatic emotion.

15. Would Se-REM work on my hurt and anger at my Boss?

Mostly no. Se-REM works on traumatic emotions that are in the past. A part of the brain that functions to sort out the past from present events gets confused by a traumatic event. Se-REM helps this brain function to relegate a past event as no longer relevant — and a person can just let it go.

16. Does it work on Grief?

Yes. Just daydream your important experiences with that person. You may have a short intense grief but then it will be sorted into the past.

17. Will Se-REM affect my memories?

No, your emotions will diminish but your memories will remain. Se-REM may increase your ability to visualize with your eyes closed, and you may recall memories that you had forgotten.

18. Will Se-REM work on any trauma?

Yes, as long as it is in the past.

19. What music is used in Se-REM?

Debussy to create calm, Bach to help you be inside your mind, Vaughan Williams and Vivaldi to encourage and inspire.

20. How is Se-REM better than regular EMDR?

Se-REM can be done over and over at the person's own convenience, no appointment necessary. In the privacy of one's own home, with no one else there, people are less self-conscious and go deeper into their emotions.
